The Popularity of Image Comics
Todd McFarlane is a man who has joined the pantheon of Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and even Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel. These men are famous for creating Spiderman, the X-Men, Superman and countless other superheroes. Todd McFarlane got his start drawing for Spiderman, but eventually left Marvel to help form Image. It was Todds work for Image that launched the new publisher.
Image Comics started small, but started with a bang. Spawn would be Todds flagship Image comic, and it was an instant success. It also ushered in a new era in comic books. The worlds became grittier, less optimistic, and more brutal. This was something the Japanese had been doing for years with works like Akira or Ghost in the Shell, but it was Image comics that heralded the darker side of comic books.
Since the success of Spawn, Todd and the rest of the staff at Image have gone on to create several other successful comic book lines, including Witchblade, Violator, the Maxx, and Youngblood. Even Lara Croft and the Tomb Raider universe has come to life in the pages of Image comics.
